Pet Euthanasia FAQs
Some of the more common questions we are asked answered below. Sometimes it’s just easier to speak to someone about it though - feel free to contact us.
-
Home euthanasia allows your pet to be in a familiar and comfortable environment during their final moments, reducing stress and anxiety. It's the most peaceful and compassionate choice when saying goodbye to a beloved companion.
-
Most pet owners are aware when their pet just isn’t themselves, but it can be difficult to ensure you’re making the right decision for your beloved pet. If their illness can’t be cured, or you suspect that they might be suffering, euthanasia may be indicated to alleviate their pain. If you are unsure, quality of life consults with a vet can help to objectively assess your pet’s comfort and give you peace of mind.
-
Our team will guide you through the process and provide tips on creating a serene environment. It's essential to involve family members in the lead up to euthanasia, so everyone can say their goodbyes in a supportive atmosphere.
-
Our experienced veterinarians will explain each step at the visit, so you know what to expect. A gentle sedation will be given, and when they are comfortable an IV catheter is placed through which an anaesthetic to be administered, allowing them to slip painlessly away. The process is gentle and allows you to be present, holding your pet's paw if desired. Afterwards, depending on your preference, we can take care of the aftercare/cremation.
-
No, the euthanasia itself is not painful. Sometimes pets may react to the fine needle used for sedation, but it’s gentler than the needle for a blood test or a routine vaccination. We do everything in our power to minimise this stress, and pets are usually quite comfortable at home. Feel free to speak to our team if your pet is needle-phobic and we can explore ways to keep them comfortable together.
-
